Introducing the C2C Certified® Product Standard Version 5.0

Introducing the C2C Certified® Product Standard Version 5.0

10 Feb 2026 · Construction & Building materials, Consumer products, Industry & Electronics · Worldwide

C2C Certified® Product Standard guides companies towards sustainable product design, offering a clear, science‑based pathway to create goods that are safer, more circular, and more responsibly made.

What is the Cradle to Cradle (C2C) Certified® framework?

The Cradle to Cradle (C2C) Certified® framework is one of the world’s most respected systems for evaluating products according to their impact on people and the planet. Unlike traditional sustainability labels that focus mainly on reducing harm, Cradle to Cradle takes a more ambitious approach: it encourages companies to design products that benefit the environment and society. Version 5.0 of the C2C Certified Product Standard represents the most recent update of the C2C Certified Product Standard. The program offers multiple certification options:

  • Cradle to Cradle Certified® Full Scope – Complete certification, covering the general requirements and all five performance categories.

  • Cradle to Cradle Certified® Material Health – A focused certification covering the general requirements and the Material Health category.

  • Cradle to Cradle Certified® Circularity – A focused certification covering the general requirements, the foundational Material Health requirements, and the Product Circularity category.

What Makes Cradle to Cradle Unique?

Cradle to Cradle is built on the idea that products should be designed for continuous cycles of use, much like nutrients in nature. Instead of becoming waste, materials are meant to circulate safely and productively. This philosophy is supported by five core categories that define the C2C Certified Standard:

  • Material Health: Ensuring ingredients are safe for humans and ecosystems.

  • Product Circularity: Designing products so materials can be reused, recycled, or composted.

  • Clean Air & Climate Protection: Reducing emissions and supporting climate‑positive strategies.

  • Water & Soil Stewardship: Managing water and soil resources responsibly.

  • Social Fairness: Protecting human rights and promoting positive social impact.

What’s New in Version 5.0

Version 5.0 centres more on product and production related impacts and less on organisational levers for change, compared to the previous version, Version 4.1. The Product Standard Version 5.0 remains science-based and thus detail oriented, with a very thorough evidence based approach. As a result, as a third party verified certification, it continues to communicate trust to markets: trust that ambitious targets have been met and the evidence to prove it.

Version 5.0 introduces a stronger focus on measurable impact criteria at both the product and manufacturing level.

The objective of these changes is to improve the practicality of certification for manufacturers while making it easier to scale the program, increase market visibility, and strengthen recognition. Recognition of Version 5 within LEED, WELL, DGNB and Het Nieuwe Normaal have been completed. Recognition of BREEAM is currently underway and is expected later this year.

Could budget hold you back from certification? Let’s find out now!

Why were these changes introduced?

Following nearly two years of experience with Version 4.1 (and five years since the launch of the full Version 4 standard), the Institute collected extensive feedback from assessors, certified companies, and the wider Cradle to Cradle community. This feedback has resulted in a certification process that is simpler, faster, and more practical.

Why Version 5.0 Matters

For businesses, Version 5.0 offers a roadmap to future‑ready product design. One that meets rising expectations from regulators, customers, and investors. The added value of Cradle to Cradle Certified® increasingly lies in generating measurable data that can be used for:

  • ESG reporting,

  • AI-driven procurement systems,

  • compliance with EU legislation (e.g. PPWR),

  • and other industry-specific reporting frameworks.

For consumers, it provides confidence that certified products are made with safer materials, designed for circularity, and produced with respect for people and the environment.

How does this fit into the broader Cradle to Cradle strategy?

The Institute aims to increase participation in the certification program as part of its broader ambition to double its positive impact by 2030. As the circular economy continues to grow, the demand for demonstrably circular products is increasing as well. This certification offers a solution for companies looking for a credible and transparent program to demonstrate their product's sustainability and circularity performance.
