Real estate is responsible for 40% of global energy use, up to 40% of global solid waste (World Economic Forum), and 40% of global carbon emissions (UN Environment Programme). Its impact on the environment is one of the most burdensome.
The sector has to address the transition to low-carbon systems in four main domains: energy, resources, space, and mobility. Regulatory initiatives and voluntary standards such as LEED and BREEAM are already in place to guide these transitions.
Given the scale of the challenges, it is no surprise that circular economy principles are starting to find their way to real estate.
